Chapter Ten – Danni

“I’m sorry,” Rory whispered against her ear as Danni sipped her wine.

“For what?” She lowered her glass, inched her head back and looked up at him. A slight buzz in her head signaled the alcohol seeping into her system. She really should have eaten more before Rory picked her up, but nerves had gotten the best of her. Or perhaps the anticipation of her date with Rory had stolen her appetite.

“For what I said to Sandi and Robert. They just…” He shrugged and looked down at the bottle of beer in his hand. The barman who served them had wanted to pour it into a glass, Rory had insisted it tasted much better from the bottle. The barman hadn’t argued.

“Forget about it. You’re right, they give love, at first sight, a bad name.” She gulped her wine down and then pulled away from him. She didn’t want to waste one minute of her date with Rory. She wanted to dance. Well, she wanted to watch Rory dance. The thought of him swaying across the dance floor made her clothes feel too tight and the room temperature too hot. Although, when she glanced over his shoulder, Danni saw a couple of other women whose temperatures had also risen as they gazed with longing at Rory.

“Do you want another drink?” Rory asked, pointing to her empty glass.

Danni shook her head. “Maybe later. Right now, I have alcohol in my system, I want to see you dance.”

“You are coming with me.” He nodded toward the dance floor that was slowly filling up.

“I’m willing to sacrifice my dignity. I want the best view in the house,” she replied and placed her empty wine glass down on a table as they headed to the dance floor.

“Always.” He drank his beer and placed the bottle down before he took hold of her hand. “So that you don’t escape.”

“You’re okay…for about five minutes, then my inhibitions will return, and I’ll scamper off to hide in a corner of the room thinking what have I done.” She giggled and he pulled her forward, his arms wrapping around her as his body swayed to the music. “Nice hip action.”

“You like it?” He circled his hips, keeping her pinned to him so that she followed his rhythm.

“A lot.” Her expression sobered as she swallowed down her desire for him. “A real lot.”

Rory lifted his hand and curled a tendril of her hair around his fingers. “The feeling is mutual.”

Before she could answer, the tempo of the song increased and he whirled her away, taking them out to the center of the dance floor where there was nowhere to hide.

Danni cursed her two left feet as she stumbled after him but slowly, she picked up his subtle movements and their bodies synced. She’d never enjoyed dancing; she’d always felt too conspicuous and out of place. But with Rory, it all seemed to click.

With carefree abandon, she twirled around before coming back to his arms which were always open for her.
